Watch my “Field Office” farm report
Hey farm friend … get excited!
I'm coming to you today from the Wind Wolf Farm field office.
That's right ... field office. (I've always wanted to do this.)
First off, I'm surrounded by some of the thickest forage that we'll have out in the field this year.
We've had great spring rains and the grasses are so thick and wonderful and the chickens are loving it.
We have more forage than we need so my cousin baled it and it'll be used for other livestock this winter when the forage isn't as great out in the field.
Next up, we've also enjoyed some wonderful rains. We're actually about to get rained on right now.
We love rain here on Wind Wolf Farm. It's kind of counter culture. I feel like every meteorologist and every weather app thinks we all want beautiful sunny weather every day.
We don't.
We love rainy days. Our pasture is like a sponge. And it soaks up these rains and feeds these plants deep down in their roots and sustains them through the summer and the dry season.
We love the rain.
Next up, we have three pens of egg laying hens behind me. We have the young ladies who were just born this spring. We've got a pen of adult ladies that were born last spring. And then we have a pen of the elders who were born two years ago in the spring.
The young hens recently gave up their controlled environment inside are ready for nighttime temperatures and fun days filled with scratching around in the soil.
Next up, our first batch of meat birds is still enjoying the controlled environment inside in the brooder. They need the heat at night when it’s a little too chilly for them.
The fluffy feathers that they’re born with aren’t great for keeping them warm in a damp dew at night so they still need that lovely heat and dry pine shaving bedding of the brooder.
It won’t be long. Probably another week or two and they’ll be joining us out here in the field as well.
We anticipate Sunday, July 19, as being our first Chicken Pick-Up Day.
We have to wait and see how those birds perform in the field however. It could be a week earlier or a week later.
But you’ll be the first to know.
